The dons assessed

Article Abstract:

The standard of most teaching at the UK's universities and colleges is high, according to Peter Milton, director of quality assessment at the Higher Education Funding Council. However, some academics have little interest in teaching, while others lack the ability to convey their subject adequately. The Higher Education Funding Council looks at areas including student assessment, curriculum, student support and learning resources, and discusses all aspects of teaching and learning with students.

Why the dons are opposed to merit pay

Article Abstract:

University vice-chancellors in the UK recognize that some form of performance-related pay will be the only way of ensuring that lecturers obtain a substantial increase in salary. Lecturer unions do not wish to be seen as too conservative, and are therefore being careful not to openly oppose merit-based pay systems. However, they fear that performance-related pay could benefit some lecturers at the expense of others. It is clear that it would take many years to introduce a new pay system.

School for dons

Article Abstract:

It is now becoming increasingly acknowledged that it is no longer acceptable for higher education teachers to be good at research but very poor at teaching, as has often been the case in the past. Some higher education institutions are now looking at how their staff can be taught to teach, and are setting up appropriate training programmes. It is likely that in the medium term all UK universities will have a postgraduate teaching certificate for new lecturers.
