Professor Andrew Rutherford

Article Abstract:

English scholar and university administrator Andrew Rutherford read English at Edinburgh University, Scotland. After National Service, he undertook BLitt studies at Oxford University, England, and in 1955 was appointed to the English Department at Edinburgh University. He showed great potential as an academic leader, and in 1964 became Senior Lecturer at Aberdeen University, Scotland. He gradually became increasingly involved in university administration, but was always a committed teacher and scholar.

Professor Carlo Dionisotti

Article Abstract:

Italian scholar Carlo Dionisotti gained a post as Lecturer in Italian at Oxford University, England, in 1947. In 1949, he became Professor at Bedford College, London, England, where he was to remain until 1970. He made a very significant contribution to the historiography of Italian literature, and had a particularly detailed knowledge of Renaissance texts. He became highly respected for the quality of his writing, and in 1989 won the Premio Viareggio literary award.

Philip Butler

Article Abstract:

French scholar Philip Butler spent a considerable part of his childhood in Lausanne, Switzerland. He studied at the University of Lausanne, and then studied in Paris, France, at the Sorbonne and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes. He became professor of French at the University of Wales, Cardiff, in 1966, and in 1970 moved to Wisconsin University, Madison. He gained a strong reputation as one of the most eminent critics of Racine.
