"Public misled on costs of Trident"

Article Abstract:

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) wants the UK government to give a detailed account of the true cost of its "nuclear warhead programme, following claims that the programme is costing the taxpayer as much as GB 1.5bn rather than the GB 410mn claimed by the government. The government dismisses the claims as incorrect, but CND's parliamentary researcher, William Peden suggests that the recent Strategic Defence Review which quotes a cost of GB 114mn for Trident, the nuclear submarine and GB 410 for the whole nuclear programme, does not include the added costs of delivering and defending the weapon, nor increased personnel and submarine bases' operational costs. According to the Ministry of Defence, the figures published in this report are the most detailed ever.

Taliban prepare for civilian rule

Article Abstract:

The Taliban is seeking to transform itself from an Islamic army into a stable, civilian government, with around 90% of Afghanistan under the Taliban's control. Top Taliban officials claim the strict Islamic laws will not be compromised, even though international recognition is unlikely unless the Taliban alters its religious stance. Other government officials accept that a compromise is necessary for the Taliban to obtain support from Afghanistan's minority groups. Strict edicts are issued daily by the Ministry for the Prevention of Vice and the Promotion of Virtue.

Pakistan tries to take over arms bazaar

Article Abstract:

The Pakistani government is seeking to make the small town of Darra Adam Khel, Pakistan, where weapons are openly made and traded, into a legalized, national industry earning foreign currency. The government believes that this town could offer skilled, inexpensive workshops for arms manufacturers worldwide. However, local people do not welcome government intervention, believing that regulating their work would mean that their income would decline.
