Rabbit plague stirs plot fears in the Outback

Article Abstract:

The rabbit calicivirus has now reached everywhere in Australia where rabbit populations used to be extremely large. It is estimated that the rabbit population has been reduced by between 80% and 90% as a result of the virus, with the population now at around 18 million, the same as the human population. Farmers welcome the fact that the rabbit population has been greatly reduced. However, some observers believe that the virus, which was being studied under strictly controlled conditions, could have been released by people wishing to cause widespread disruption.

Freed from their silly headgear

Article Abstract:

The UK and Australia have set up the New Images campaign, which aims to modernize how Britons view Australians and how Australians view Britons. This campaign will by the end of 1997 have covered 180 schemes designed to foster unity among teachers, scientists, artists, students and actors from both countries. It is now becoming more widely recognized that the UK and Australia have a lot to offer each other, even though their respective governments have had few positive links over recent years.

Outback racism haunts election

Article Abstract:

The election in Queensland, Australia, has gained a great deal of attention across the whole of Australia because of strong local support for Pauline Hanson, who is advocating policies that discriminate against non-white minorities. She is calling for Asian immigration to be halted and for Aborigines to be denied public welfare funds. Opinion polls indicate that her One Nation party has 18% support across Queensland, rising to between 30% and 40% in some rural constituencies.
