Vision of authority leaves Israel in shock

Article Abstract:

There has been an outcry among Israelis following the broadcasting of an amateur video film which shows two young Iraeli border police inflicting violence gratuitously on six Palestinian workers who were caught trying to enter Jerusalem illegally to work. The two soldiers involved claim that the beatings took place because they were still upset about the fighting between Palestinians and Israelis which occurred on Sep 25, 1996. Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem claims that the Israeli security forces have killed 1,251 Palestinians since the beginning of the intifada in 1987.

Israel unrepentant after killings at Muslim shrine

Article Abstract:

It is likely that conflict between Israelis and Palestinians will not come to a quick end following the killing of three Palestinians and the wounding of 50 others by Israeli soldiers at the al-Aqsa Muslim shrine in Jerusalem. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat claims that Israeli soldiers carried out the attack in spite of reassurances from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that efforts were being made to calm the situation. There have also been gun battles between Palestinian police and Israeli troops in West Bank and Gaza.

Israel braced for further suicide attacks

Article Abstract:

Some Israeli observers feel that militant Palestinian organisations such as Islamic Jihad believe that they have approval from Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leader, to undertake further suicide bomb attacks. Israel expects further attacks because Palestinian security forces are seeking political concessions from Israel, making cooperation extremely difficult. There are now indications that joint security operations are breaking down.
