Radio 3 faces varied attack on sticky wicket

Article Abstract:

Nicholas Kenyon, the new Radio 3 controller, has plans to modernise the station to compete in the new commercial arena where Classic FM will be broadcasting. Mornings, between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and early evenings from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. are times to attract new listeners with more accessible music-based shows. Presenters will be encouraged to be more conversational and knowledgeable, with more live, outside broadcasts. The new BBC policy of 'Producer Choice' gives the opportunity to use external studios and technical staff but not orchestras.

Cheap seats, rich people's arts

Article Abstract:

Some people have suggested that National Lottery funds should be used to reduce ticket prices for operas, plays and similar productions, thus making them more accessible for ordinary people. However, simply lowering ticket prices would not neccessarily encourage more ordinary people to attend. Most people do not believe that art is for them, seeing it as the preserve of a rich elite. National Lottery funds should therefore be used to bring the arts into the lives of ordinary people, rather then expecting them to enter new social circles.

Soloists Ensemble founder and music director Robert Turrell is particularly attracted to dynamic playing and 20th century repertoire. He places strong emphasis on education, and stresses that the Soloists Ensemble's educational programme ensures that children can become fully involved in rehearsing and performing a new piece of music. He also wants to ensure that cross-art connections are established, with art and design becoming involved.
