Reading, writing and riches

Article Abstract:

Writer Sue Townsend was extremely nervous about her work being read by others when she first joined the Phoenix Writers Group at the Phoenix theatre in Leicester, England, in 1979. However, her career took off very rapidly. She won an award under the Thames Television Playwrights Scheme, and her play 'The Ghost of Daniel Lambert' proved to be extremely popular. She later became very well known through her 'Adrian Mole' diaries, which subsequently appeared in novel form.

The grit beneath the froth

Article Abstract:

Most people retain elements of their childhood in adult life, according to author Sue Townsend. She feels that this is why it has not been difficult for her to write about the transition of her main character, Adrian Mole, from a teenager into adulthood. She has become very wealthy, but feels that she has not lost touch with the hardships of her childhood. She has never felt tempted to leave Leicester, England.
