Rebels come from every direction

Article Abstract:

Labour party leader Tony Blair and the party's publicity officials are keen to emphasise that the party's left-wing no longer holds any real power. Some left-wing MPs did rebel against the party line when voting on tax cuts recently, but this was soon glossed over and turned into a triumph for Tony Blair. It is true that the hard left does not hold a strong position in Parliament, and the left has lost its power centres over recent years. However, it is most unlikely that Tony Blair will be able to completely eliminate rebellions on various issues.

Welcome back from the wilderness

Article Abstract:

Recent television coverage of the Labour party's years in opposition has claimed that it has not been possible to establish a strong middle ground between traditional socialism and conservatism. The implication has been that the Labour party has had to betray its values in order to try to regain support. However, the Labour party clearly recognises that it can no longer change the world, and has adopted an optimistic tone as it has moved back into the political mainstream.
