Representations of the intellectual

Article Abstract:

The 1993 Reith lecture on the definition of the intellectual at the end of the 20th century suggested that their role must be public once written and published, but required personal inflection and private sensibility. Julian Benda defined intellectuals as a small, highly visible band of super-gifted and morally endowed philosopher-kings. These powerful individuals work in the knowledge industries rather than in physical production. They are willing to state their unease with conventional formulas in public.

Holding nations and traditions at bay

Article Abstract:

An intellectual's role is to provide stability and to make a stand against prevailing opinion. Although individuals should choose which side to support, they should criticise before showing solidarity. Intellectuals are influenced by the traditions of patriotism, community and family. They help ensure a community's survival during a national emergency. Intellectuals are defined differently in different countries and nationality is considered to demonstrate a person's culture and mind-set.

Intellectual exile: expatriates and marginals

Article Abstract:

Exile makes some intellectuals stay beyond the mainstream because of adjustment to the new power. Some intellectuals who are permanent members of a society are outsiders. Their metaphysical sense of exile involves restlessness and movement. Examples are the writer V S Naipaul and Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno. Intellectuals' consciousness is unable to rest anywhere. The 18th Italian philosopher Gianbattista Vico described social reality as having evolved from definite beginnings.
