Robinson suggested share deal to family's offshore trust

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair may be forced to seek the resignation of Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson as controversy about the latter's personal finances increases. It has recently been revealed that Robinson held talks with the trustees of Orion Trust, his family's offshore trust, before they purchased shares worth 10 million pounds sterling in engineering concern TransTec, which Robinson founded, and shares worth 8 million pounds sterling in Coventry City Football Club. Some observers claim that Robinson exerted undue influence over the management of Orion Trust.

So who will end up paying for Geoffrey Robinson's low-cost loan?

Article Abstract:

The revelation that UK Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson failed to disclose a large loan from Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson has caused him great personal embarrassment, as well as damaging the government's reputation. It is clear that Mandelson was aware from the very beginning that it was not advisable to seek a loan in this way, and this is why he did not mention the matter to Prime Minister Tony Blair. Mandelson is obviously insecure, and this is why he felt he had to borrow money to purchase a house which would attract admiration.

Robinson censured by MPs

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party is calling for the resignation of Paymaster-General Geoffrey Robinson after he was criticized by the Commons Committee on Standards and Privileges for failing to disclose an interest in a trust. Sir Gordon Downey, Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, stated to the committee that he would have advised Robinson to register the interest if he had been consulted. There is no indication about how the government will react to this embarrassing incident.
