Rough ride for Jospin after smooth victory

Article Abstract:

New French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin faces considerable challenges as he attempts to convert the Socialist programme into reality. He is aware that his government is under great pressure to be successful, as the National Front would derive most benefit from any failures. He will face demands from the Communists and other left-wing groups, and will also find it difficult to meet the commitments made by his own party. Economic problems, including high unemployment and faltering growth, will make his task even harder.

Why France won't vote for Europe

Article Abstract:

French voters are generally not very interested in European issues, even though many, such as those in the town of Maubeuge on the Belgian border, live in close proximity to other European countries. They are much more concerned about local issues, such as immigration and crime, and do not realize that closer links with the rest of the European Union will bring more employment. In Maubeuge, a key marginal seat in the forthcoming general election, politics are very complex, with 13 candidates contesting the election.

Pasqua's eloquent gestures say it all for Balladur

Article Abstract:

Veteran French politicians Charles Pasqua and Edouard Balladur are both staging a comeback in the run-up to the forthcoming election. They both saw a decline in their political careers after Balladur ran against Jacques Chirac, leader of the Gaullist RPR, in the presidential election in 1995. He was supported by Pasqua, who had previously been very close to Chirac. Both men are now in strong demand to defend the centre-right government and to give impetus to the election campaign.
