Russia rouble plan 'carries little risk.'

Article Abstract:

Russia's long-term target of a stable exchange rate may not be successful unless the government can deal with high inflation and reduce uncertainty about its monetary discipline, according to international bankers and economists. However, it will probably succeed in its aim of ensuring that the rouble flucutates only between 4,300 and 4,900 to the dollar in the period to Oct 01, 1995. This is partly because rouble-dollar trading will be light over the summer.

Is this our post-atomic dawn?

Article Abstract:

There are still more than 16,000 nuclear warheads in the world, and these would remain even after the signing of a ban on the testing of nuclear weapons. There will still be fierce debates about nuclear proliferation, nuclear deterrence and similar issues. However, banning the testing of nuclear weapons would be a significant step, given that nuclear testing has been carried out frequently in recent decades.

How would Russia cope without Yeltsin?

Article Abstract:

Russia has traditionally relied heavily on the power of a single leader, which has caused problems if that person has fallen ill. However, this situation has now changed, as shown by the recent ill health of president Boris Yeltsin. The country's future is not inextricably linked with his fortunes, and other powerful politicians have emerged who could take his place if necessary.
