Saddam's athletes tripped up at visa hurdle

Article Abstract:

The 97 Iraqi athletes who undertook a three-day journey to compete in the pan-Arab games in Beirut, Lebanon, have been denied access to Lebanon. This refusal is directly associated with Lebanon's continued anger against Iraq, which invaded Lebanon in 1990. Lebanon is also under pressure from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to not get on friendly terms with Iraq. In contrast, Syria gave the Iraqi athletes an open visa when they arrived at the Iraqi-Syrian border, a reflection of the growing economic and cultural links between Syria and Iraq.

Palestinian identity forged in the wilderness

Article Abstract:

The events of 1948, in which around 700,000 Palestinians living in what became Israel lost their homes and became refugees, did not create Palestinian nationalism, but transformed it. Palestinians initially fled to the West Bank and Gaza, but subsequently a Palestinian diaspora emerged in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the Gulf states and further afield. The Palestine Liberation Organization grew in strength as a movement in exile, but this inevitably brought it into conflict with whatever country it was based in.

Promises, promises
