Scotland: the unanswered questions

Article Abstract:

Political parties which are in favour of an independent Scottish parliament realize that they must motivate voters if they are to be successful in the forthcoming referendum. They have put aside the differences between them in an effort to ensure as large a turn-out as possible. This means that many key political issues have remained unaddressed. Similarly, the economic aspects of Scottish devolution have received very little attention. This is a cause for concern, as devolution will only be successful if it is an economic success.

Boom turns to bust as the yuppie years come to an end

Article Abstract:

Many financial journalists in the UK failed to predict in 1990 how severe the recession of the early 1990s would become. The boom period created when Nigel Lawson was chancellor came to an end, and the effects of an over-heated economy and high inflation began to be felt. It became necessary to produce very cautious Budgets, especially as the Treasury began to predict negative growth. Some financial journalists were able to foresee some of the social and financial consequences of the recession.
