Secrecy lingers in home of the SS-20

Article Abstract:

The SS-20 missile is a mobile, middle-range rocket, more powerful, accurate and reliable than European nuclear weapons. The 1987 Intermediate Nuclear Forces (INF) US-Soviet treaty to reduce nuclear weapons banned the missiles' production. The old factory near Votkinsk, Udmurtia, Russia re-opened making prams, washing machines, microwave ovens and vacuum cleaners. Two American inspectors observe trucks leaving and have the right to examine any crates over 32 ft long. The factory is still secret and no-one may see inside without the director's permission.

Georgia preying on his mind

Article Abstract:

Leader of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze promotes his country after civil war removed the elected president. The ex-Soviet Foreign Minister has contacts in the UN and the International Monetary Fund. Economic problems and ethnic rivalries led to threats on his life. He sent 3,000 troops to Abkhazia, where an ethnic minority were fighting for independence, to keep the railway open. His policy is to permit independence: he promised the Abkhazians they would retain their national integrity and language.
