Serbia reaches breaking point

Article Abstract:

The Serbian economy is estimated to have 30,000 per cent inflation since money was printed to finance the war and internal industries are collapsing. Unemployment is about 20% of the work force. Many refugees from the 800,000 homeless in Croatia and the 400,000 in Bosnia have arrived in Serbia. In Kosovo about 2million Albanians from whom President Slobodan Milosevic removed autonomy may demand independence or unification with Albania. America and Europe are taking a stand against Serbia. Although Serbia still has food and elctricity the quality of life has deteriorated drastically since Tito's death in 1980.

Bloody drama, tragic results

Article Abstract:

The conflict between Russia and the rebel republic of Chechnya has already led to 20,000-30,000 deaths, including at least 2,000 Russian servicemen. Russia has used extensive military power against Chechnya, but has still failed to capture Chechen leader Dzhokhar Dydayev or any senior field commanders. The Chechen desire for independence seems to be a strong as ever, while many ordinary Russian soldiers are becoming disheartened. Against this background, it would be better for Russian president Boris Yeltsin to negotiate an end to the war as quickly as possible.

The Inter-Governmental Conference (IGC) which is to open shortly in Turin, Italy, will actually last 12-18 months, with minister dealing with a wide range of issues. Its key aim is to improve the efficiency of European Union institutions and working procedures, but it will deal with a number of sensitive questions, including European monetary union. The UK may hamper progress in some areas, but it is likely that broad agreement will be reached eventually.
