Shock, horror! Reading books can be fun

Article Abstract:

UK publisher Reed Consumer Publishing has increased its sales by about 30% due to the policy adopted by its Managing Dir Richard Charkin. Charkin was able to lower prices by opting out of the net book agreement. He aims to extend book sales to all areas of the population. Only a quarter of the UK population purchases books. Charkin is setting up a telephone sales unit for businesses wishing to sell books, such as restaurants and craft shops and a direct mail system. He also aims for freelance salespersons to sell directly to the public.

But did Grade get it right?

Article Abstract:

Channel 4's Chief Exec Michael Grade attacked the BBC's plans at the Edinburgh Television Festival. He said the governing board should be disbanded and an Independent Television Commission should regulate the BBC. He ridiculed plans to prefer up-market 'distinctive' programmes. He suggested that current programming should not be changed. The BBC sees satellite television as the new provider of mass entertainment, freeing them for 'BBC programmes.'
