Shy tycoon brings slander case

Article Abstract:

The millionaire Syrian businessman Wafic Said, a friend of Mark Thatcher and the royal family of Saudi Arabia, is suing another Syrian living in the UK for libel and slander. The British press are very interested in Mr Said because of his influence in financial circles, and will follow closely the actions against Misbah Bakin, who lives in Esher, England. Specific details concerning the alleged false statements are the subject of injunctions. Mr Said has played a big role in various defence contracts between the British and Saudi Arabian governments and has also secured contracts for British Aerospace.

British role in superguns 'known in 1989': MPs leave some unanswered questions

Article Abstract:

The Trade and Industry Committee investigating the Iraqi supergun affair produced a report without time to check documents about Sheffield Forgemasters. Some information reached the Cabinet Office but the committee did not interview anyone there. Sir Hal Miller, Conservative MP warned three departments about the project. The committee did not interview anyone from the Joint Intelligence Committee so did not discover who provided finance. The level of government which received the information was not discovered before the Customs and Excise haul in April 1989.

Capel staff approached in Anglia shares inquiry

Article Abstract:

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) officials investigating claims of insider dealing in the shares of Anglia television will take evidence from some past and present employees of stockbroking concern James Capel. It is believed that the investigation is considering the actions of Conservative peer Lord Archer and a close associate, Karen Morgan Thomas, who made a profit of around 22,000 pounds sterling from the purchase of 10,000 Anglia shares.
