Article Abstract:

An increasing number of Open University students will be taught via electronic media over the next decade, and it will not be long before students will be expected to have access to a personal computer with a CD-rom drive and modem. The Open University believes that on-line technology will bring great advantages, improving communications between students and staff. There will be an overall eletronic environment for all students, but electronic delivery will be introduced on a course-by-course basis.

Casual approach to a teaching shortage

Article Abstract:

The Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals reported on the numbers of part-time and short-term contract staff employed in higher education establishments in May 1993. Short-term contract staff increased from 9,000 to 19,400 between 1980 and 1991 and part-time staff increased from 1,600 to 4,600.The reduction in permanent full-time academic staff prevents career progressionand creates an unbalanced age profile. Training and other staff development is neglected in contract posts.
