Terminal Five at Heathrow: as certain as the global crisis it will help to encourage

Article Abstract:

It seems very likely that plans for the construction of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport, London, England, will go ahead, despite opposition from neighbouring local authorities and from environmental groups. The facility, which will handle an additional 30 million passengers a year, will play a key role in resolving problems with insufficient capacity at the airport. It will undoubtedly have a significant environmental impact, a fact which may not be acknowledged by the many people who will use it as the starting point for international air travel.

The nagging doubt of the benefit

Article Abstract:

When Beveridge established the National Insurance scheme in 1942, old people were usually poor, but in 1992 about 40% have private pensions and do not need state pensions. Those who only have the state pension usually qualify for income support as it is inadequate. Many recipients of child benefit would prefer benefits to be redistributed so that those in need received more. Income tax would need to be increased by seven pence to compensate for the abolition of National Insurance contributions.

A good home's where the art is

Article Abstract:

Community arts projects have had a significant social impact in the UK, according to a report from Comedia, a group involved in arts research and planning. Many people who have participated in arts projects feel that their lives have been changed. They have become more confident, learned new skills and got to know other people better. These projects can also have community-wide benefits, bringing the young and old together and giving the unemployed a sense of purpose.
