Sign of progress for deaf viewers

Article Abstract:

Televirtual, which specializes in 3D graphics, is linking with the Independent Television Commission and linguistic and facial processing specialists at the University of East Anglia, England, to develop a sign language system for television. This system is made up of a linguistic translation software program, a lexicon of sign language assembled through motion capture techniques, and virtual human animation. Data from the linguistic translation will be linked with the stored hand movements from the signing lexicon and a 3D graphic model of a virtual human.

Scheduled to hook viewers

Article Abstract:

ITV hopes that its programme schedule for autumn 1996, the details of which have recently been released, will reverse the loss of viewers which it has been experiencing. It has launched a number of high profile shows in 1996 which have been widely criticised, and advertisers are now growing concerned about its inability to take viewers away from the BBC. All terrestrial channels are facing strong competition from cable and satellite channels.
