Singapore Inc: where you conform or leave

Article Abstract:

Singapore's government has worked extremely hard to ensure that the island has a very positive image, being free of corruption and arbitrary justice. Its policies tend to be strict, but this has allowed the country to become one of the most economically successful in the world. It lacks natural resources and land space, so has focused on becoming an international financial and service centre. The forthcoming trial of Nick Leeson will be extremely significant, serving as an opportunity to show that Singapore will not tolerate fraud and deception.

Media slings and arrows still wound Singapore

Article Abstract:

The government of Singapore monitors the reporting of its affairs in the media extremely closely, and reacts very strongly to any hint of criticism of its integrity. It has already restricted the circulation of two of Asia's largest regional news magazines, and local media is under very tight control. The government is joining others in east Asia in arguing that Western-style press freedom is contrary to Asian values.

South-east Asia ready for battle with speculators

Article Abstract:

Central bankers in south-east Asia are determined to fight off any attack on the currencies of the region by hedge fund and asset allocation fund managers. They are willing to use repurchase agreements to provide the necessary liquidity for banks to act against attacks by speculators. However, Thailand is still regarded as very vulnerable to speculators, and even the more firmly based currencies may not be immune.
