Six of one, half a dozen of the other

Article Abstract:

Variable ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta, which is shortly to celebrate its 30th anniversary, are generally seen as being a 20th century phenomenon. Until the end of the 18th century, composition was dominated by the concept of genres, and it was not really until the beginning of the 20th century that it was regarded as essential that a new piece should be entirely based on original ideas. This led to the emergence of works for usual groups of instruments. However, it is important to be aware that individualized ensemble works existed in earlier times.

Composers' Domesday

Article Abstract:

'Contemporary Composers' edited by Pamela Collins and Brian Morton provides a listener's guide to contemporary musical composition. This directory of 500 living composers specifies scoring and first performance dates but does not mention timings. Increasing internationalism, style mixing and worldwide record distribution is noted by Brian Ferneyhough in the preface. He suggests radio is removing the more demanding musical styles and that traditional music publishers are unable to use many new composers.

The other notes of great composers

Article Abstract:

A new English translation has been published of 'Story of a Friendship: Letters of Dmitry Shostakovich to Isaak Glikman.' This book will probably revive debate about the nature of Shostakovich's politico-artistic intentions. 'Letters of Gerald Finzi and Howard Ferguson' clearly shows the unease of older British musicians about the impact of Benjamin Britten.
