Small country, big ideas

Article Abstract:

Scottish cinema is set to enter a new era as the new Scottish Parliament sweeps aside the siege mentality that has been prevalent in Scotland for many years. Mixed views are being expressed about how a Scotland free of English domination will portray itself in films. There are signs that Scotland is sufficiently confident to question, rather than merely present versions of stereotypical views. Scotland has already become the focus for a number of high-profile productions, including a 7 million pounds sterling adaptation of Iain Banks's thriller 'Complicity.'

There's no place like home

Article Abstract:

Nationalism is both irrational and extremely important, according to Scottish playwright David Greig. He believes that people become more likely to want to retain their nationality as technology makes nationality increasingly meaningless. He feels that theatre will have a significant role to play in uniting people in a single space in a simple way as globalization becomes increasingly complex. He manages to bridge the ironies of being both an internationalist and Scotland's most important playwright.
