Smart cars, clean fuel

Article Abstract:

There have been some significant developments in the car industry in 1996, with some manufacturers at last showing a sense of social responsibility. The new Mercedes A-class, for example, is extremely fuel-efficient, while the Renault Scenic shows extremely good use of space. There has been considerable emphasis on very small cars, which are now regarded as being fun to drive and having a very positive image. Some moves have been made to improve the traditional petrol engine, while advances have also been made in the development of other types of technology, such as hydrogen fuel cells.

More leap on to the off-road gravy train

Article Abstract:

Sales of sports utility vehicles declined slightly in the UK in 1996, having risen to more than 80,000 in 1995. However, this sector is set to expand once more with the launch of Mercedes' M-class and the Land Rover Freelander. The growth of this sector reflects the increasing diversity of the car market and the fact that more motorists are now seeking a vehicle which closely reflects their individuality and lifestyle. The most significant threat to the sector's expansion is the possibility of higher fuel taxes.
