Snap! CBI and Labour play the same competition card

Article Abstract:

The CBI has for many years stated that the UK government should retain the current system of investigating competition, with responsibility being split between the Monopolies and Mergers Commission and the Office of Fair Trading. In contrast, the Labour party has recommended that these two bodies should be merged, creating a single competition authority. However, the CBI and the Labour party have recently found themselves unexpectedly agreeing on how to reform competition investigation. They are both now seeking a competition authority with much wider powers, operating on the basis of the Office of Fair Trading.

Can caring companies beat the cold-blooded cost-cutters?

Article Abstract:

Companies which focus on developing customer loyalty and on establishing firm links with employees and shareholders show a better long-term performance than those which are concerned only with short-term profit, according to Frederick F. Reichheld, director of Bain and C. This company, a US management consultancy, has in the past been closely associated with the ruthless cost-cutting approach to business of the 1980s. However, it now advises companies to introduce 'loyalty management' practices.

Article Abstract:

Trade minister Richard Needham spends a great deal of time travelling, and has covered almost 400,000 miles over the last three years. He has a much lower profile than some of his other ministerial colleagues, even though his job is one of the most strenuous. However, he greatly enjoys the challenge of developing strategies to support the UK's business community.
