The death of a mother, the pride of a child

Article Abstract:

Men who die in the course of dangerous pursuits are usually portrayed as brave heroes, while the traditional role of women has been to suffer and grieve. When this established order is overturned, some people find it very hard to adjust. This was shown in reactions to the death of mountaineer Alison Hargreaves, who was criticised for putting herself in danger when she was the mother of two young children. Other observers have said that she had just as much right as a man to put her life in danger. In both cases, the question of whether parents of either sex should act in this way has remained unresolved.

Lost opinions under a sexual ID system

Article Abstract:

The current trend towards making strict definitions of a person's sexual identity under the terms heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual can severely damage beneficial relationships between two people. Unmarried women who share a home, for example, now tend to be seen as lesbians, even if their lifestyle gives no evidence of this, and single men are suspected of being homosexual, even if they have simply chosen to remain a bachelor. Categorising people into a strict sexual identity severely limits their personal freedom.

Political platitudes that allow genocide

Article Abstract:

The recent publication by the US of aerial photographs which appear to show mass graves near Srebrenica has been dismissed by some observers, who see this move as being designed to deflect attention from ethnic cleansing in Krajina. However, it must be remembered that the Krajina Serbs still have a future, and they are now moving towards starting a new life elsewhere. This is not the case with the missing Muslims of Srebrenica.
