Snatch a kiss before flying
Article Abstract:
The Royal Academy in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of works by Marc Chagall to accompany its Summer Exhibition. The works, from the period 1914 to 1922, show Chagall in his prime, but with some uncertainty about his direction. They reflect the mixed forces at work in his life at that time. They still have a practical vision, but give an indication of his dreamy later works. The 'stage' half of the show is particularly interesting, giving a foretaste of the Chagall who later became completely lost.

The vapid virtuoso
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery in London, England, is staging a retrospective of the work of artist John Singer Sargent. These paintings show how Sargent deliberately holds careful balances and avoids being specific. It is possible to argue that he is guilty of evasiveness, particularly in relation to his paintwork, which both demands to be noticed and is not intended to be looked at. This exhibition seeks to promote Sargent as a non-portraitist who produced scenes, landscapes and murals.

Death becomes Van Dyck
Article Abstract:
The Royal Academy in London, England, is staging an exhibition of the works of Anthony Van Dyck from the period 1599 to 1641. The first picture in this exhibition is a self-portrait undertaken when Van Dyck was only 15. This work shows considerable sophistication. Other works include 'Self-Portrait with a Sunflower,' an early portrait of Isabella Brant, Ruben's wife, and 'Lamentation over the Dead Christ.' These works have merit, but they never really stun the viewer.
