'So much of our Irish past is snagged with myth and suppressed memory, it is as if the blood and the bitterness made truth too painful to bear.'

Article Abstract:

An Irishman recounts his efforts to establish exactly how his older relatives were involved in Irish politics. The era during which his grandmother was an active member of the female wing of the IRA is recalled, and the version of Irish history he was taught at school is discussed. His childhood heroes, including Patrick Pearse, are presented, and the way in which he came to associate being Irish with being Catholic is detailed. The prospects for a lasting peace settlement in Northern Ireland are discussed.
