The pressures of modern society are prompting many people to regard friends negatively, according to some observers. This view is supported by Dibgy Anderson in his book 'Losing Friends.' In contrast, others feel that friends are more important than ever, as geographical mobility is eroding family ties.

Mandy Allwood believes that her relationship with her partner Paul Hudson has become stronger since the deaths in 1996 of the octuplets she was carrying following fertility treatment. Hudson states that he was the stronger partner in the relationship at that time.
