Interior designers believe that high quality light switches and sockets play a key role in the overall image of a home. It is not advisable to try to economize on electrical fittings, but there are ways in which cheap fittings can be improved if it is not possible to replace them with more expensive ones. These include painting white switches with eggshell paint to match the wallpaper. Where sockets cannot be replaced, they can be disguised with a shaped cover in gilt or silver.

The British are still not completely convinced of the beauty of knotted wood painted in bright colours to show the flaws in the grain, according to furniture designer Robert Conway. His Conversation Pieces, which are free-standing items made from kiln-dried English Redwood, are extremely unusual, and do not appeal to everybody. However, his newly formed Handmade Furniture Design & Production Co. is offering pieces which are softer and less uncompromising.
