What's the true purpose of learning?

Article Abstract:

Education is becoming increasingly demand-driven, rather than supply-led. People are exercising more control over what they learn, and many now regard education as a benefit in itself, rather than using it to achieve some other goal.

Time to wake up to the California dream

Article Abstract:

California provides a clear model of the way in which encouraging new high-tech industries can play a significant role in both job creation and general economic expansion. It can also be seen from experiences in California that governments do not necessarily play a very direct part in encouraging high-tech industries. If the UK wishes to follow California's example, then it should improve the education system. However, it should be aware that the driving force for growth will be bottom-up, rather than top-down.
