'Some take the Venice Biennale very seriously indeed; others regard it as the Eurovision Song Contest of Art.' (centenary of the world's oldest festival of contemporary art)

Article Abstract:

The Venice Biennale, the world's oldest festival of contemporary art, is currently celebrating its centenary. It still attracts many artists, museum directors, press officers, art dealers and art critics, even though some observers are scathing about it. Indeed, some believe that it has only survived so long because people enjoy visiting Venice in Jun. The largest single exhibition of the 1995 festival is 'Identity and Otherness,' which looks at 20th century live.

Lonely echoes

Article Abstract:

The Royal Academy in London, England, is currently exhibiting some of the late works of French artist Georges Braque. Many of these take the form of an echo, recalling his early works. Braque did not indulge in constant self-reinvention, and retained elements of Cubism throughout his work. Most of his late works are variations on themes which haunted him throughout his life, and there is a very strong atmosphere of wistfulness.

He's just an old softy at heart

Article Abstract:

The Hayward Gallery in London, England, is currently holding a retrospective exhibition of the works of Claes Oldenburg. These include brilliant early pieces and many works which reflect his desire for art to take its form from life itself. The works, which include 'Soft Typewriter' and 'Two Cheeseburgers with Everything,' show Oldenburg as one of the best American artists of the 20th century.
