Sorry, Sir Paul, an apology is not enough

Article Abstract:

The case of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence, which Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Condon has now admitted via an intermediary was not investigated properly, highlights the complex and strained relationship between the police and black people in the UK. The Metropolitan Police has very few employees from ethnic minorities, and two out of five black and Asian police officers have experienced racism from their colleagues. The attitude of the police towards black people may be partly fuelled by the fact that black people have failed to make use of what economic and political power they have.

A weekend lesson in self-help

Article Abstract:

The Saturday school organised by the Afro-Caribbean community in the Handsworth district of Birmingham, England, is one of a growing number of supplementary schools being founded in inner city areas in the UK. They are being set up by parents who feel that their children are not receiving a high standard of education in their mainstream school. This concern reflects the findings of a recent report by the Office for Standards in Education, which states that Afro-Caribbean young people, especially boys, are not achieving as well as they could in education.

Breaking through the race barrier

Article Abstract:

Most young black people in the UK find it hard to cope with the conventional educational process. They are much more likely than whites to be excluded from school, and attract negative reactions from teachers, who often find them threatening. Many black children become disillusioned and frustrated as they face hostility from teachers and fellow pupils, and therefore fail to fulfill their educational potential.
