Sorting mad from bad

Article Abstract:

The Crime (Sentences) Act passed recently by the UK government allows a court to pass a prison sentence and order that an offender is admitted immediately to a secure mental hospital. This will initially assist courts in dealing with criminals suffering from a psychopathic condition, but it will eventually be extended to cover other offenders with mental health problems. Some mental health experts believe that this does not go far enough, and are calling for all criminals with a mental disorder to receive treatment, whether or not there has been a psychiatric diagnosis.

Why do barristers fear this man?

Article Abstract:

General Michael Scott, the lay commissioner responsible for handling complaints against UK barristers, regards himself as an umpire. He does not feel particular loyalty to barristers, but also wishes to protect them against unreasonable complaints. He points out that barristers have a very difficult job and that the vast majority of them do very good work. The only significant change he is calling for is the power to award compensation in cases of inadequate service.

Now for true equality in the workplace

Article Abstract:

The UK Equal Opportunities Commission believes that it is now time to produce a single piece of legislation bringing together all existing sex equality and anti-discrimination measures. It is to seek opinions on how to create an effective legal framework which would ensure that sex equality is treated as a basic human right. Its consultation document also raises the question of whether the new legislation should allow positive discrimination in employment.
