Sowing the seeds of discontent

Article Abstract:

Genetically modified (GM) foods have become an issue of considerable concern for many Britons since 1996. The GM foods debate has reflected the state of contemporary society, and has shown that ordinary people have become mistrustful of government, science and large companies. Well-managed campaigning by pressure groups has played a significant part in diminishing public confidence in GM foods. The Soil Association believes that the GM controversy has shown the government to lack understanding of public sentiment.

A natural reaction

Article Abstract:

There has been significant growth in interest in organic foods in the UK as consumers begin to lose faith in the mainstream food supply system. However, production of organic food is not sufficient to meet demand, and it is estimated that 70% of organic food consumed in the UK is imported, mostly from the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. The market for organic food was worth around 340 million pounds sterling in 1998, and organic food is forecast to account for between 7% and 8% of the total food market by 2002.
