Spain wants to share Gibraltar sovereignty

Article Abstract:

The Spanish government is keen to emphasize that it is adopting a flexible approach to negotiations with the UK about the future of Gibraltar. It has stated that the UK can retain Gibraltar for as long as it wishes, under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht. However, it also wishes to negotiate with the UK about joint sovereignty over Gibraltar. No decision has been taken about whether a joint sovereignty period would last indefinitely or be a transition to full Spanish sovereignty.

To Britain and Spain, Gibraltar is becoming an irritating 'stone in the shoe.' But the people on the Rock are standing firm, determined not to crack under the threat of direct rule from Whitehall

Article Abstract:

Both the UK and Spanish governments are becoming increasingly frustrated by the determination of the 30,000 residents of Gibraltar to defend their island's heritage and history. The UK government recently threatened to impose direct rule on Gibraltar if the island did not introduce stricter regulation of its financial services activities, and this has prompted strong opposition from Gibraltarians. They fiercely protect their independence, regarding their culture as unique.
