Split on euro reveals Jospin's weakness

Article Abstract:

The government of new French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin has so far shown a very inconsistent approach to European monetary union. In the run-up to the general election, the Socialist party committed itself to entering the single currency on time, with policy on European monetary union moving away from strict monetarist orthodoxy and towards growth and providing additional employment opportunities. However, European affairs minister Pierre Moscovici has now said that it will be necessary to investigate public finances before France can decide whether to join European monetary union.

Mandelson teases French Left

Article Abstract:

UK Minister without Portfolio Peter Mandelson has attended the National Assembly in Paris, France, to debate with Francois Hollande, French Socialist Party General Secretary, the differences and similarities between the policies of Jospinism and Blairism. Both men agreed that the French and UK governments are pursuing similar policies in very different countries. They also agreed that Blair and Jospin have a lot in common. Observers believe that France and the UK increasingly see themselves as friendly rivals.
