Spot of shelling follows the morning shop

Article Abstract:

The residents of Kargil, an old trading post located on the crossing of two rivers halfway between Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, and Leh, capital of the Ladakh region, face considerable difficulties as a result of fighting between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. They are frequently exposed to shelling from Pakistani gunners, and this makes everyday life very hard. Most are Shia Muslims, and are therefore very hostile to Pakistan, which is mainly Sunni.

India is fighting hand to hand for Kashmir

Article Abstract:

India has become very sensitive about media coverage of its conflict with Pakistan for control of Kashmir. This seems to be because it is losing this battle, or at least making only very slow progress. India has captured two peaks above the road to Kargil and Dras, where it has been in direct conflict with Pakistan-sponsored infiltrators, but is still facing strong opposition. Local people have been forced from their homes in some areas.

Powell to put end to India's sibling spat

Article Abstract:

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon have placed an additional burden on relations between India and Pakistan. India is angry that the US has readily accepted Pakistani support for its military action against Afghanistan, as it sees Pakistan as part of the problem. US Secretary of State Colin Powell is now to intervene.
