Stewart the great competitor

Article Abstract:

Alec Stewart became vice-captain of England's cricket team in the winter of 1991, having played for them since 1989. At 10 years old he played for the Malden Wanderers, Surrey champions, and became batsman-wicketkeeper at the Oval in 1981. He possesses natural talent as a batsman and a competitive nature. His father, Micky, is manager of the team and denies nepotism. Stewart played in the 1990 tour to the West Indies when Gooch was captain and made a century against the Leeward Islands. His game was England's first win against the West Indies for 16 years. Stewart trained to improve his technique for Test match level.

Lewis prepared for pivotal role

Article Abstract:

Clairmonte Christopher Lewis, 23, was born in Georgetown, Guyana, son of a pastor. The family emigrated to England when he was 10. Although he is a loner and religious, his ambition is to replace Ian Botham when he retires and become captain for England. He has played for Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. He was inspired by Leicestershire coach Ken Higgs, who will become his personal bowling coach. When he was 16 his big chance as a bowler came during a Brent Schools tour of Trinidad. His batting ability showed in a Test match in the 1991 summer series. His fielding is excellent so he could become an all-rounder.

Message from Oz: over and out

Article Abstract:

English cricket is no longer up to top international standards, as shown by the failures in the recent tour of Australia. Standards will not improve until efforts are made to change the domestic game, which attracts too many ordinary players and does not offer appropriate training for international matches. Practice sessions for the international teams are not demanding enough, and players are allowed to get away with a clumsy, slapdash approach.
