Still up to his fancy footwork

Article Abstract:

Charles Haughey is popular in Ireland partly because of the very scandals that threaten to engulf him, and his ability to boost the economy but the latest scandal is lkely to be his downfall. Born into a working class background, he has always attracted scandal since he has been part of the government. He was first associated with gun running, and then associated with people involved in financial scandals. These embarassments, his hard stance and his economic management have endeared him to the Irish, but recent claims of phone tapping may be his undoing.

When Ireland was an island

Article Abstract:

Despite an increase in crime, many Irish people approve of Ireland's membership of the EC as the country cantake her own stand on world issues with foreign policy independent from Britain .Ireland used to pride itself on a traditional, religious society but in the late 1950's migration to cities began and people were glad to use membership of the EC in 1973 to demand safer sex and easier divorce. Traditional culture is disappearing; the Irish language is rarely used although traditional Irish music is popular in Europe.

The hopes and fears of 50 years

Article Abstract:

People who attended the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of VE-Day, which were held in Hyde Park and many other locations throughout the UK, expressed mixed feelings. Many feel that the sufferings they endured during the second world war were in vain, as the world has not become a better place. There has been no real reconciliation between nations, and it would not take much for a third world war to break out.
