Stop betraying the classics

Article Abstract:

It is common for television and film adaptations of classic novels to contain serious errors. In the Andrew Davies television adaptation of 'Vanity Fair,' for example, care was taken to ensure that costumes and hairstyles were true to the period, but no attention was given to researching how the characters would have spoken. Some errors merely show a lack of research, while others are more serious, arising when directors insist on including elements that would never have been thought of by the authors of the novels.

Hollywood's real drug problem

Article Abstract:

The portrayal of drug-taking in films has always been somewhat uncertain and unconvincing. Most films featuring drug-taking fail to convey any sense of what people may actually seek or find in taking drugs. Films that attempt to get inside the head of drug users generally fail. In fact, the films that have presented the most convincing portrayal of the experience of drugs are mainly the ones that have avoided taking drugs directly as their subject. These include David Cronenburg's 1991 film 'Naked Lunch.'

On the trail of 'The Third Man.'

Article Abstract:

Many people who visit Vienna, Austria, try to identify the locations used in the 1948 film 'The Third Man.' These include the Zentralfriedhof, or Central Cemetery, and the Riesenrad, a 19th-century Ferris wheel in the Prater park.
