Suit yourself in retail, buying, selling and style

Article Abstract:

All the leading retail chains in the UK run graduate recruitment programmes. These are usually divided between central services and store management. Graduates are particularly keen to work for Marks and Spencer, which in 1997 took on nine graduates as trainee selectors and 20 as trainee merchandisers. This company is willing to consider applications from any graduate with a good degree, regardless of discipline. In contrast, BhS runs a buying and merchandising graduate scheme for which it requires graduates who already have some form of retail experience.

How to get a cushy job in furnishing

Article Abstract:

Houseware has become the most rapidly expanding retail sector in the UK. However, it can still be difficult to establish a retail career in selecting, purchasing and merchandising home furnishings. The leading stores generally do not have structured career programmes for graduates, and it is therefore advisable to consider opportunities for specialization in home furnishings offered by larger department stores such as John Lewis and Debenhams. The latter company has a management training programme that takes on 40 graduates each year.

Lords of the aisles

Article Abstract:

Logistics has become a rapidly expanding element of retail activity in the UK, and this means that attractive opportunities are emerging for graduates in this sector. Supermarket chain Asda, for example, recruits 120 graduates each year on its three-year retail training scheme, of whom around seven are taken on to work in logistics. Sainsbury's runs an 18-month logistics training programme for graduates covering areas such as logistics planning and buying support depot management.
