Sundance kids

Article Abstract:

The Sundance Festival was originally conceived as a festival for independent film makers, but increasingly the big studios are becoming involved. The festival was rescued by Robert Redford in 1985 who wanted to show the work of independent film companies. However independent companies are not necessarily poor reulting in quite large companies showing alongside smaller ones. Major studios are attempting to get involved by offering amenities to producers without interfering with their work.

Shoot to thrill policy

Article Abstract:

Many different thriller and suspense films were shown at the 1998 thriller film festival in Cognac, France. This event was not the focus of extensive media attention, unlike the annual film festival in Cannes, France, and was aimed at people who are really committed to thriller and suspense films. The grand prix was awarded to 'Face,' directed by Antonio Bird and starring Robert Carlyle. The success of this UK film follows that of another UK film, 'Petits Meurtres Entre Amis,' in 1995.

Of luvvies and lawnmowers

Article Abstract:

A number of particularly interesting films have been shown as part of the 1999 London Film Festival. Spike Jonze's 'Being John Malkovich' is an excellently executed satire on the negative aspects of celebrity, while Nicholas Winding Refn's 'Bleeder' is a study of masculinity and its discontents. Other notable films include Bruno Dumont's 'L'Humanite,' a meditation on love, death and the nature of guilt, and Lukas Moodysson's 'Show Me Love,' a very well-observed comedy.
