Sunderland shows you can with a Nissan

Car manufacturer Nissan's factory in Sunderland, UK, made 98 automobiles per employee in 1997, while Rover's Longbridge plant in Birmingham, UK, made just 33 automobiles per employee. Rover claims to be improving productivity, with the comparative statistics misleading as they do not take into account the niche models made at Longbridge. Nissan's Sunderland factory produces 20% more than General Motors' plant in Eisenach, Germany, Nissan's closest rival in Europe. Ford's factory in Dagenham, UK, is the company's most productive European facility, annually making 62 automobiles per employee.

Ford puts Liverpool on road to nowhere

Ford has decided to move production of the Escort car from its plant in Halewood, Liverpool, England, to plants in Germany and Spain. This will lead to one-third of the Halewood workforce being made redundant, and has prompted some observers to express fears for the future of the plant. Scaling down operations could mean that Ford will import an extra 125,000 cars, worsening the trade deficit of the UK car industry. The decision will have a significant impact on a community where job insecurity has already become a way of life.

Ford seeks control of largest dealer

Article Abstract:

Ford, the largest car seller in the UK, is seeking to form a joint venture with Jardine Motors, another large Ford dealership, to take control of Dagenham Motors, the largest Ford dealership. Dagenham operates 10 main Ford dealerships in London, England, and the South-east. It sold 12,000 Ford cars in 1997. This move comes at a time when the number of dealerships is declining substantially and the leading dealers are taking a growing proportion of sales.
