Why Blair's romance with Murdoch will end in tears

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is clearly very keen to gain and retain the backing of media owner Rupert Murdoch. This has been reflected in the fact that Blair persuaded Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto to make an apology to the Sun newspaper, owned by Murdoch, for Japan's behaviour during the second world war. It is very unlikely that the government will take action to prevent Murdoch's newspapers indulging in predatory pricing. There seems to be a very private concentration of political and media power at the very heart of the UK, exactly what New Labour claimed to oppose.

The cautionary tale of Labour's last moderniser

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair should look carefully at the experiences of Harold Wilson, who came to power in 1964 in very similar circumstances to his own. Like Blair, Wilson was the youngest prime minister of the 20th century, and his views were similar to Blair's. His administration began very well, but he became unpopular and isolated very quickly. He lost all sense of proportion, worked too hard and failed to communicate effectively with senior ministers.

He's not one of them - and it shows

Article Abstract:

Labour party leader Tony Blair will face a struggle with his reform plans for the party in 1995. His strengths and weaknesses are likely to come under greater scrutiny, with the widespread support which followed his election waning, and his lack of political experience will be highlighted. He has the advantage of bringing a new approach to traditional political issues, but must still deal with traditional views within his own party.
