Italy's men of violence throw off the state's chains

Article Abstract:

Italy took firm action against the Mafia in the early 1990s, especially following the murder by the Mafia of magistrate Giovanni Falcone, who had probed Mafia activities, in 1992. However, this situation now seems to have been reversed. The current centre-left government headed by Romano Prodi has focused on preparing Italy for a single European currency, and is also keen to undertake constitutional reform. Opposition leader Silvio Berlusconi is being persuaded to agreed to a new electoral system with judicial reforms which will negate the effect of much of the work of anti-Mafia magistrates.

How the kidnap and rape of Dario Fo's wife was ordered by Italy's right-wing rulers

Article Abstract:

Evidence is now emerging that the kidnap and gang-rape of Franca Rame, actress and wife of Italian playwright Dario Fo, by neo-fascists in 1973 was ordered by senior police officers. Furthermore, these officers may have been acting on instructions from senior government figures who wished to lash out at a left-wing organization that was expressing opposition to the ruling Christian Democrats. Fo is now demanding that the Italian state apologizes for the great trauma the incident caused to Rame.

Shouting could drown out Italian democracy

Article Abstract:

Italy is experiencing severe political problems, with splits within political parties widening and doubts being expressed about the reputation of parliament and the constitution. Those who support outgoing prime minister Silvio Berlusconi believe that he should be given the benefit of new elections, while his opponents claim that elections cannot take place before the electoral system and the regulation on media ownership are changed.
