A landlubber beneath the stuns'l boom iron

Article Abstract:

Patrick O'Brian, 79, wrote a series of novels about naval life in the Napoleonic Wars. He recreates the atmosphere of the 18th century for his characters Jack Aubrey RN and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon. He knows the period so well, he considers he is writing about living people. O'Brian was born in Ireland but grew up in England after his mother died. He was often ill with a lung complaint, for which he spent much time sailing. He has written about 21 novels, biographies of Picasso and Joseph Banks, and done translations.
