Suu Kyi keeps flame of democracy alight

Article Abstract:

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi remains determined to speak out against the country's military regime, despite reports that she has lost her will power after six years of house arrest, from which she has only recently been released. She is determined to restore democracy to the country, using calm negotiation as her main weapon. She may be in a stronger position now that the military regime has recognised the importance of attracting foreign aid and investment into the country.

Congress split shatters myth of Indian unity

Article Abstract:

India's Congress Party is believed to have performed very badly in the recent general election, and the Congress prime minister, Narasimha Rao, is now coming under strong pressure to resign. Most ordinary Indians believe that politicians have done very little to help them, and the Congress Party has even lost ground in areas where it has traditionally been very strong. The party is now very divided, as is the country as a whole.

Island tribe fights to stay alone in dwindling forest

Article Abstract:

The Jarawa, Stone Age tribesmen who live in the rain forests of the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, are strongly resisting loggers working in the area. They have retained their own culture, and have for many generations had a reputation for being very fierce. There are some rare hardwoods in the jungle area which they have been given by the India government, and much illegal logging takes place there.
