Swan-song of the opera revolutionaries

Article Abstract:

Opera Factory London, formed by David Freeman in 1982, is to shut down after it presents 'And the Snake Sheds Its Skin' for two weeks in Apr 1998. This show does not reflect the work undertaken by the company during its history, but rather represents a significant new departure. It was intended by Freeman to be the beginning of efforts to redefine the company's work in terms of what he designates 'Theatre of the World.' He welcomes the fact that the company's last show will be very different from anything it has attempted previously.

Master of the Oo and the Trimba, exponent of the drum-and-ostrich-feather

Article Abstract:

New York street musician Moondog attracted a strong following with his mixture of Amerindia percussion, jaz-style riffing, troubadour ballads and European counterpoint, which was unique when it first became known 30 years ago. He often used sounds which were literally taken from the streets of New York, but also performed some of his works with a symphony orchestra. He is still composing and performing, and is soon to give a concert in London.

Hitting the little big time

Article Abstract:

The Opera and Music Theatre Forum (OMTF) covers 40 small-scale opera companies in Britain and Ireland, and estimates that companies of this kind play around 1,500 dates every year. They do not receive much media attention, but are in fact a strong sub-culture. The OMTF aims to give them collective strength, ensuring that they can lobby for their interests and have access to information.
